It's now been almost a year since we lost our first pregnancy on Dec 26, 2011 and despite throwing everything at it (supplements, accupuncture, Chinese herbs, relaxation, no caffeine, no alcohol, ect) we still aren't pregnant again. I've been reading up on IUI as we are going to start doing cycles before we get up into the "big guns" of IVF and I have so many questions!!!!!
Has anyone had success?
What can I expect?
Any other info that would be useful to a first timer?
We're going through Fert+ in Auckland, I'm 40 and my AMH is 2.57 pmol/L and the dr wants me on clom.
We were going to start this month but the clinic told me that it really wouldn't work with the holidays and people being off. Then Jan and Feb are the two busiest months so we'll see.

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
Hi Scubababe,
My husband and I jumped straight into IVF, so I have nothing useful to tell you about IUI. Sorry. But I just wanted to wish you well with your new treatment. It is emotionally tough sometimes with hormones... and the highs and lows of hoping... But truly best wishes. Hoping you get your two lines of a positive preg. test before too long.

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
I am starting IVF treatment for the first time. Infact my needles arrived via courier this morning.
Start on 15th Jan - Burselin and Puregon. I am 40 and it is really hitting me seeing the medication, feeling a bit scared really.

Hi Gweatherup,
how are you going with those injections? My experience is that it gets easier after the first little while. I wish you well with your cycle.

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
Well, our first round of IUI didn't go so well. I was on 2 clomiphene for day 2 to 5 and definitely noticed some action going on in my ovary area - bloated and just feeling different. Had a couple blood tests and all looked good. Went to have the scan (which is incredibly uncomfortable) and they found 4 follicles.
I'm thinking "Whoohoo, I HAVE 4 follicles! The drugs and my ovaries work!" The dr was not impressed. Without looking me in the eye she went on about "we only like to have 3 or less.... you've only been trying for just over a year (I've only been MARRIED for just over a year!), it's only your first cycle.... blah, blah, blah. I finally had to interrupt her and say "So, you're not going to do it." She said having triplets at my age wouldn't be good. At my age I'd be lucky if there was ONE good egg, triplets is a bit of a stretch!
So, we were sent home... hopes dashed and very disappointed. We were told to have protected sex for the rest of the cycle.... yeah, right! We aimed all we could at those four little eggies and now I'm in the two week wait to see if anything worked.
If this doesn't work, we'll do one more round at half the dose and see if they'll actually do that one. If that doesn't work then it's on to IVF in May.

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
I know it is gutting to hear that they are not going to go ahead with the IUI however with your AMH there is a good chance of all those follicles having eggs and multiple eggs fertilising. I am 40 and my AMH is 0 and I have gotten good fertilization rates from my 2 IVF cycles, so the risk is very real.
Hang in there, the first few cycles of clomiphene are giving you an idea of how you are responding to the drugs and they can tweak the dosage if it is working too well. I was on 3 tablets a day (150).
It is common to try IUI up to 5 times for it to work, I seriously hope that it happens faster for you but hang in there, your AMH is good, it will happen.

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
Hi
I did four rounds of IUI last year and they weren't successful for me but I know that they are successful for other people. The odds aren't that great for the first couple of tries but they get better after that.
I would recommend keeping your life as stress free as possible during cycles and keeping busy during the two week wait. I thought that the two week wait would be just like all the other months of trying but I found it harder. It's also quite hard doing back to back IUIs. I've been having a break before moving onto ivf which has been really great.
Good luck with your IUI treatment. I hope that it is successful for you.

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
Hi
It's like reading my own story! My husband and I have been trying for nearly 3 years and accessed fertility assoc. last year. We aren't yet eligible for public funded treatment and have been paying privately. We had our first cycle of IUI in Oct 2012. Unfortunately it wasn't successful, but we learned so much from the experience. We have just started our second cycle this week and have made plans around it. The best advice I could give is:
- have a laugh with your medlab people... You'll get to know them well!
- talk to your partner about the scan. It may be a male sticking a scan probe into you. This made my husband really uncomfortable. I'm not going to have him with me this time because it stressed me out knowing he was uncomfortable.
- take time off work when you have guess-ti-mated ovulation. Do things that chill you out and help you relax for a few days before. You will get called at the most unexpected moment and you need to be ready and relaxed, not trying to hand things over at work!
- take a couple of chill days off after.
- plan lots of things to cover the wait. A couple of weeks feels like a couple of years!
Last time we got the test done and got the result in a letter which we picked up from FAssoc. It was horrible seeing it in black and white. This time we are not having a test done. We are going to wait to see if my period starts or not. Feel it may be easier this way, because in all fairness I've been use to starting it every month for the last 3 years! It may not be as disappointing. However, we have kept the letter to give our child as an 18th birthday gift to explain why they are not getting a car!
Keep your spirits up!

Now for the wait!
Clomiphene had this really wierd effect on me this time. Last time it was a breeze, this time I kept crying at everything! Happy, sad, frustrated, excited.... Then I went to wanting to rip the heads off of cute kittens and nice little old ladies! But I got through it and it produced 2 follicles, double the last time! Had insem today and it was so much better than last time. I had fun with my husband in the lab to get the sample and the procedure was quick and felt comfortable. Now for the 14 day wait... Andy I do hope the little suckers hang on, they only have one job! I may see you in the waiting room at FAssoc.

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
Awesome Mich, holding thumbs for a good result for you guys. I so HEAR you on the Clomiphene, it makes me a mad cow, poor husband...I feel like a complete shizo sometimes but yeah, at least it gets the ovulation going and follicles looked good for this cycle.
I'm with Fertility Plus, as we're not govt funded and they're cheaper, and because I'm a teacher, I have to take unpaid leave for scans and procedures - doesn't help being up in Kerikeri and Aucks being the nearest place for treatment! Pretty stressful! Anyway, hang onto your sanity and let's hope for the best

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
We had a 3rd unsuccessful round of IUI in April which was pretty stink. It doesn't help that two of our good friends are due on the dates we would have been due if IUI 2 and 3 had of been successful We are now waiting for our government funded IVF treatment, which will hopefully happen early 2014. In the meantime i have given up my job. It was stressful and hopefully that will make the process a little easier. Good luck with your cycle

Re: Doing IUI in the new year
Hi Everyone,
I was just wondering how it works for the IUI treatment if you ovulate on the weekend?

Weekend service
The clinic is staffed over the weekends and it works as if it is any other day. The one thing i learned was they don't read emails at the weekend, so if you need to communicate with them it is better by phone. If you are in Auckland, you need to go to the lab in Ellerslie to get your blood tests.
