Hi everyone,
A Newbie here
Partner and I have just been advised by FA that due a diminished egg reserve and vasectomy, we would need to have IVF with ICSI. Problem is, I just received a letter today informing me we would be eligible for funding in November 2017 and looking at a 15 month wait after that. I cannot seem to come to terms with how horrifying I find that, it's simply not an option to wait nearly 4 years due to my age. So we are looking at doing a cycle privately, however we can only afford one round.
Are we barking mad to put all our hopes on one round? Has anyone got pregnant on the first cycle? I'm feeling very sad about our options atm.

Re: IVF ICSI - how many cycles?
Hi,
Look, you're not putting all of your eggs in one basket doing a round of IVF now. You're putting them in a test tube and hoping they'll become embryos. You must be realistic with your chances of success as they may be as high as 40% or as low as 10%, but if you don't go for it and wait they will only get lower. The waiting is by far and away the hardest part, waiting for a letter, waiting for blood results, the two week wait every month - if you can possibly avoid this soul destroying waiting then I'd say go for it.
Of course money is the bottom line and you should think how you will feel if you are not successful first round having spent a lot of money. Will you always be grateful that you tried or will you see it ultimately as a waste of precious savings?
I'm still waiting for my letter for the IVF go ahead, it's almost destroyed me so please be aware that I may have a biased point of view!
I really wish you the best luck with everything xx

Hiya,
My partner and I were fortunate enough to be successful with the second embryo implant (Frozen Embryo transfer) on our first publicly funded cycle.
We have also just finished our second cycle unsuccessfully (which we paid for). It is most definitely a numbers game and incredibly heartbreaking when it doesn't work. But is it worth investing your money into a 50% chance? ABSOLUTELY. I just think that in 5 years, what is it that ill regret more? 1) Having spent that money or 2) Taking no risk and not knowing.
Good luck to you sweets.

Hi Skeno,
Your situation sounds similar to me - with a vasectomy. We funded one cycle as we don't qualify for funding because just as 0206567j and Dana30 say it is worth it for the chance, rather than live with regret. It is a numbers game, and advanced age doesn't help. Go for it! And if you need to ask me anything...

We were blessed to have success from our first cycle of IVF. 41-42 is generally a tough age group and has 5-25% success rate. But as many others who have mentioned here it’s a number game are absolutely right, so don’t stress too much. Devote a few minutes every day to unwinding without totally checking out from your daily routine. You can even look up IVF success rates at fertility clinics near you. Ask potential doctors about the ages of patients that he or she has treated, and his or her preferred methods of treatment.
Think positive, rest lots, and this will happen! Best wishes for you!

Re: IVF ICSI - how many cycles?
We were in the same situation as you. We chose to do one round of private and if that didn't work then wait for public funding. Our private round was stopped twice before egg collection so we decided to wait for public funding as if the next round was successful we would be $20k in debt, not the $13k we originally planned and accepted. So be aware that one round isn't always just the base price.
Waiting is hard but it would be so much harder if we didn't try that private round first as the anxiety of not knowing what to expect etc is no longer there, we are able to focus on being us again while we wait. However our wait was only going to be 8 months which is far different to 4 years!
Tui- was your round successful post-vasectomy? This is the situation we are in too

Re: IVF ICSI - how many cycles?
Hi Aimee88,
We did two rounds post vasectomy - has had it for many years, and it's low success rate for reversal so got right into IVF considering my age.
Both rounds were unsuccessful, mainly due to my egg quality. I respond ok and eggs are fertilized but they just don't keep going. It is a huge financial and emotional cost. I guess the only way for us is donor eggs...a lot to think about. It sounds like you are younger than me so there is hope for you good luck!
