Hi there,

We've been ttc for 2 years and are officially 'unexplained'. So that means 'keep trying for the next 3 years and then be put on 1 year waiting list' (by which time I will be 35) ...or go private of course. My previous doctor gave me a prescription for Clomid (which I never took) and now I am contemplating taking it. I understand usually you get monitored on this so not sure if it's safe just to do it on my own. I only have one month but would have to go back to my new doctor (who may or may not give me more months) for more.

What do you think...4 years seems a long time to do nothing!

Re: Clomid without monitoring unexplained

Hi McLeods

Thought I would reply to let you know that you are not the only one having to make these kind of big decisions about treatment options and timing. It is not easy to know what to do really.

I will fill you in a bit about me: My DH and I have been TTC 3 and a half years (officially). We first went to the specialist in November 2 years ago - it took 8 months after that to have a laproscopy for endometriosis then we were put on an 18 month waiting list for ivf - which will come up in November this year (in which case it would then make over 4 years of TTC). Hope this make sense.

I was so upset when I was told about the 18month wait on the ivf list!! Their approach in the meantime was to 'see what happens' or to go private. Over this summer we did a Private round of Clomid and an IUI which was unsuccessful. At the very least it got me familiar with taking the drugs. Clomid is not actually as scary as I thought it would it be. It didn't really have any effect on how many eggs I produced so I think they thought next time they would need a bigger dose. I did find I had a racing heart for a month or so after that cycle - probably a combination of the drugs and the stress I guess.

As I am now 35 I also now need to decide whether to wait out the last 6 months for ivf (if we need it - and I am still hopeful that we don't) or to go ahead with more private treatment. I'm pretty sure I will wait it out though, as we figured it would be better to have money saved up our sleeve if the funded ivf doesn't work - and I also found doing the IUI very stressful the first time which is hard with working full-time etc. I did wonder about Clomid on it's own, but it has not been suggested to me I think because I am ovulating regularly?

Anyway, enough about me! What did you decide to do? Clomid or no?

Good luck with it all

Re: Clomid without monitoring unexplained

Hi and thanks for replying.

Yes the decision making is the worst! I just want someone to tell me what to do!! Like I said to my husband, 'just becasue the government doesn't pay for it, desn't mean we shouldn't do it.' (in reference to going private for something at some stage...just what and when who knows??!)

Decided not to take the Clomid. Will give it another year (that will be 3 years ttc naturally) as I read unexplained can sort itself out in 3 years (haha, I also read most couples concieve within a year!).

I get acupuncture and have started taking Vitex...I am also getting counselling as this is all a bit much for me!!

Hoping a more relaxed approach is all I need!

Good luck for your upcoming IVF...or going natural in the meantime!

Sounds like you are doing some positive things in the meantime.

Counseling sounds like a great idea - TTC can be very stressful and involve some big decisions when things don't go to plan.

Good luck with it all, and I'll have my fingers crossed for ya ;)

RE: Clomid without monitoring unexplained

Hi Mcleods,
I see your posts were a few months back so this is probably not valid. But here's my view- I was prescribed clomid with minimal monitoring. A doctor wont (shouldn't) prescribe it to you unless there is some evidence of irregular or lack of ovulation. Which can be determined by simple blood tests. My gyney doctor put me on the lowest dosage available. And they did do a blood test to see if I showed a better sign of ovulating which I did. Unfortunately it hasn't worked for me- so onto the next step.

I have had a friend who was also prescribed it and clomid was the simple answer for her. She got pregnant within the first month on it. And same for her second baby.

I know if specialists put you on a higher dosage they need to monitor more closely (using scans) as there is higher risk of multiple pregnancy.

In summary I would recommend it if you do not ovulate regularly. And if you arent sure you should be able to get some blood tests to check your progesterone levels. Which any Dr should be able to do.

Hope that helps.

Re: Clomid without monitoring unexplained

4 years is certainly long period that can amount you to be frustrated and depressed. However, clomid with or without monitoring, could be tough decision. But personally I believe that Clomid monitoring shouldn't be optional. It is essential to make sure you have not under responded or over responded. If you have not responded, you need to know to change your protocol. If you over-respond (have too many big follicles), then you are at risk for multiples. Moreover, you might be buying it online, so really can't trust - it could have all sorts in it. At the most, try Soya; it’s the herbal version of Clomid
My humble advise; if you are considering fertility treatment, please see a reproductive endocrinologist, not just an OB-GYN.
