Hi
Just found this site whilst trawling the internet for some answers.
My partner and I have both turned 42 recently so we know time is against us. We want to give ourselves the best possible chance to have a child. As we will be funding everything it's important that we know that a clinic/doctor will also be doing everything possible to help.
We recently had a meeting at Fertility Plus in Greenlane (Auckland), as it's very close to where we live and their prices seem to be 25% less that Fertility Associates. We went fully aware that out chances are low but we hoped we would find an understanding ear and a practice committed to helping us achieve the best result possible. We felt like we were rushed in out consultation, with the result being offered either IVF or IUI. The choice was ours. We didn't feel like we had been given any great advice and that we should go away and do our own research before heading back.
My sister from Hamilton recently went to Fertility Associates in Hamilton and had come away feeling supported and knowing that they would provide the service to gain the optimal results. She had been told things like they always implant 2 eggs in over 40s, freezing the rest. They also had research that usually a 2nd IVF from frozen has had more chances due to the body having had time to release the hormones from the injections, thus percentages for attachment the 2nd time were way higher.
When we brought this up in our consultation our doctor said that they'd probably only get one egg and that out chances would be the same each time, and we should probably give up after 3 attempts.
I guess logic tells us that we should head to Hamilton for our treatments. Just wondered if anyone has had similar experiences in Auckland or better ones that they can recommend?

Where to start
Hi KK48
I don't have any experience of Fertility Plus in either Hamilton or Auckland so I can't help with recommending either of them sorry, but thought I would say that it is a good idea to go with a clinic where you feel supported and welcomed as it can be a stressful time going through fertility treatment. I am with Fertility Associates in Hamilton, and they seem ok - thorough and organised.
Best wishes with your choice

Where to start?
Thanks Angelbaby. I'm seeing on other posts that it's really important to have good people around you. Sorry just discovered on my post I has mentioned my sister had gone to fertility plus when she had actually been to fertility associates in Hamilton. Sounds like they have great staff there who are constantly applying what they have learned from research and the clinics successes. She's in hospital as I write this awaiting her first child after her 3rd IVF. Exciting times

How exciting for your sister! It must be helpful to have a sister who has been through it all too

Re: Where to start?
Hi Ladies
Hope you all are well. I found this website while looking for answers. I too have been to fertility associates and yes they are very expensive. I just decided it would be a good idea to talk to you ladies as I have been secretly really really down regarding infertility. We havent started any options yet, but I am soo depressed over this. This month my period was late and I had spotting and cravings only to find out it was actually just a hormonal time for me. How did you all do it? Im 32 and healthy but I think the pressure from everyone is just getting me down.

Re: Where to start?
Realise this is an old thread but thought I'd wack out some tidbits of info from my experiences in case it helps anyone in future.
Me 42. Husband and I did our first IVF this year. Didn't work. But we managed to get a good gander at my eggs (not as dire as I'd thought). Got 7 eggs and all fertilised. 5 seemed to look nice and defined and proceeded to develop at differing rates for 4 days but by Day 5 - there were only 2 blastocysts. But they were rated or graded highly and we transferred both.
So it sucked that it didn't work but as I said we got to see what kind of eggs I can grow.
We were recommended to try Karen at Repromed by a friend. She is very nice, approachable, helpful, informative. The nurses are all friendly and efficient too. The clinic is nice.
I've had clashing reviews of Fertility Assoc from other friends. Some love them (and I include the North Shore branch in this as well). But others had a terrible emotional time. One doctor (the Remuera branch) told a mate - she'd never have her own baby - she'll need IVF and donor eggs. He wasn't gentle about it either, so pretty upsetting for her. But don't worry - she's shortly to become mum to her own son (conceived naturally). In your face Dr Doom! Yet other friends had wonderful service so who knows.
Perhaps consider a swishy clinic such as the above mentioned in your first experience. But yes be prepared to pay 25 - 30% more in fees. You will need to feel secure and that you're getting your moneys worth.
Me? I'm gonna try Fertility Plus next I think - save my poor husband some dosh. Reckon I can handle any briskness now that I know what to expect...Good luck out there. Hey - it'd be great if any readers could really start to use these forums - I find the NZ forums on Fertility a bit scarce - let's get it going....
