Under 30 starting first round IVF

Hi All.
We are starting our first round of private IVF due to my husbands low sperm count. We have to do the long course as I have less follicles than the doctors first thought. The hardest part about the process so far is the amount of time that goes by. We were trying for a year before looking into fertility options and another six months have gone. If we went public it wouldn't be until 2016 that IVF would start. We are lucky to be in the position to afford the first round but are worried about what we are giving up financially for a 50% chance of success. I guess all we can do is hope that it works but it is difficult as we have no one going through similar circumstances and unless you have to go through fertility options people don't actually understand the emotionally side.

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

Hi, we are also under 30, and are starting IVF in January. We have been trying for over 5 years, I've had every test done under the sun back in the UK, We decided to move here and had the "if it happens it happens" mentality for over a year, the other month we decided to continue tests here after 6 months of clomid I was given I the uk. I had a blood test done to check my egg out, and after all these years I find out I had a very low egg count. It's so hard finally having the answer. Not really understanding my emotions at the moment, and like you say no one seems to understand.

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

Hi there,
We are also under 30 (well I am, hubby is slightly older) and waiting for our IVF treatment in February 2015. Feels like it's been a long road for us, over 3 years now, everything just takes so long. I have never had regular cycles, and finally diagnosed with PCOS which was a shock as my only symptom was lack of periods, I am otherwise very healthy. I was started on clomiphene and tried that 3 times with increasing doses, but no ovulation. Then we moved cities and had to go with a different treatment provider which was very stressful because it seemed to take months for my file to be transferred. They suggested we go straight to IVF, and thankfully we qualify for funding so we decided to go with that. The waiting has been hard, but it's so good to now have a treatment plan to look forward to. I'm hoping with age on my side we will be successful first time! We had our orientation day this week and it was quite anticlimactic to be honest, they didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. They had already told us it'll be the month of Feb and were noncommittal about a date, I do understand that they have lots of schedules to juggle, but thought I'd come away with new information or something. Bring on Feb!
Take care smiling

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

Hi ladies,
We are also under 30 and due to start of first round of ivf in Feb also. I have mild endo and my bf has antisperm antibodies which was a bit of a shock to discover as I'd never heard of it before. We've been trying for 4yrs and went to fertility associates in jan this year so have been on the list for funding ever since. Ive just received paperwork for blood tests etc and consent forms and have an appointment made for January to find out more and what the plan is for treatment. I know we are doing ivf icsi, because of the antibodies and are starting first day of my period in feb.
I'm extremely nervous about the thought of it not working, but i guess i just have to be positive.. although that is hard sometimes! I totally understand how u all feel about people not understanding the emotional side of infertility.. it really is tough.
Where abouts are u all located? We are in Wellington, so with wgth FA. They have been great and really friendly which makes the process a bit better. I wish everyone luck with their journeysxx

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

Hi Hanna24
My husband has the sperm antibodies also and in a private paid attempt last month used ICSI to fertilise our eggs. We did not think about a positive test to try assist with the likelihood of a negative test which it was this time. Athough it is so hard not to have some hope. We are located in Taranaki so stayed in Hamilton for a week throughout treatment. We were lucky to come out with a frozen fertilised egg so hopefully this is our next step. We have not lost any hope yet as this is only our first attempt and you hear more positive results after the second IVF round. Our private treatment isn't until 2016 which is so far away which is why we paid as the thought of waiting another two years was too long for us to think about.

Hi hanna24 and StaceyM30,
Stacey, sorry to hear that your first attemp didn't work, that must have been tough!! And the travel from NP! Have you had another go now? I hope you are successful very soon.
Hanna, I am located in Auckland.
I hope everyone has a nice and relaxing Christmas break. For me this time of year is hard because I'd love to have Christmas with my own little ones running around. I am planning on having a relaxed couple months before we start our first attempt in Feb!
Take care everyone smiling

Hi ladies,
sorry for a late reply to u all. Stacey, thanks for sharing your journey and im sorry it didnt work first time. We are also aware that it may not work first time, but are hopeful it will happen with time and i wish the same for you. I haven't heard from anyone else dealing with antibodies, its such a bugger huh, cos we were told his sperm itself is great and hes got a high count.
Hi alhet, i am also 29, i understand how u feel anxious and excited at the same time, im like this too. Have u started treatment yet? Are u doing icsi or conventional ivf? Would love to hear from u all. We have our appointment on the 26th before started treatment in feb

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

Hi,
I'm also starting IVF this month (9 days or so... eeeep). I'm 26 years old and have PCO which I found out during the routine pelvic scan! The reason for doing IVF was a failed vasectomy reversal, so now we have to do TESA and ICSI.
Doing IVF is a position I never thought I would be in, having had regular periods etc all my life and no family history of conception issues, so it's been a bit of a whirlwind for me. Being under 30 also makes it difficult as I don't know anyone else who has had infertility issues which makes me a bit isolated! Plus I still have friends who are accidentally getting pregnant.
This whole process far different to how imagined the process of getting pregnant, the excitement of wandering through baby stores has been replaced with a fear of going anywhere near the places as I don't want to become excited and be let down if IVF doesn't work. It's so odd trying to get pregnant without being excited about it. I hope this is normal!
I'm in the bottom of the south island otherwise would love to catch up with others in my position

Hi everyone,
How are you all going? I'd love to hear progress updates!
I am starting my first injection tomorrow, and have my first scan and blood test booked for Thursday. I am on an Antagonist cycle. Has anyone else been on this type of cycle?
Hope you are all taking care smiling

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

My cycle was cancelled due to the follicles not growing, so much for this being a straightforward process like I had hoped!
Take 2 is later in April sad but they identified an issue with low LH so hopefully a med change will mean a better result next round.

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

Hi All.
I am 29 and my husband is 30.
We are currently in the early-ish stages of IVF ICSI. This was very much expected as my husband has been one of the lucky ones who has beaten bowel cancer. Due to the radiation and chemo, he has zero swimmers. Thankfully, he froze his sperm prior to treatment commencing and has 13 frozen tubes that can be used.

I have my baseline scan tomorrow and have so far had a number of bloodtests done. I will start my drugs during my next cycle in about 2 weeks..all going well. We have decided to go private opposed to waiting 2 years. After just starting to get back on track after my husband being sick, this is quite scary as it feels we have put EVERYTHING on the line and I am terrified of it not working. I feel like as soon as I mention IVF the first thing someone brings up is how they know someone that's on their 3rd....8th....12th time trying. Which brings me to why I joined this forum, I need some positives. Something that will make me excited rather than scared.

So that's me. Thought id just say hi and tell you a bit of my story.

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

Congrats Alhet, it's exciting that it worked so well for you.

People might be more relaxed about talking about things if they have been trying for longer as they have had longer to emotionally process things, maybe that's why you never hear about people on their first cycle? Is the success rate lower on the first cycle because they are making an educated guess about which drug combo will work? My first set of drugs didn't work but they know why so this made the choice of drugs for round two easier. Thankfully we only have to pay for the drugs used after the first cycle didn't work, so it's not a huge financial blow and we can save enough between now and take 2 to afford to restart immediately.

It can be so hard to stay positive, but my thought process at the moment is that the staff know what they are doing and they want the same result as we do.

Re: Under 30 starting first round IVF

Wow congrats alhet29 that's fantastic news!! Nice to hear!
Aimee88 sorry your first round of injections didn't work, but better that it was cancelled with a view to restart quickly rather than only get 1 egg for example. There is a bit of experimentation huh, we all react differently!
My injections went really well, too well in fact because I was at great risk of OHSS, so I have to wait for a couple months before I can have an egg implanted. It was successful though and we got 18 eggs, and 15 fertilised overnight, 7 were then frozen straight away and 8 left to grow on to blastocyst stage, 5 of the 8 made it so we are stoked. Gutted we have to wait another 2-3 months but glad to have 5 embryos ready to go, such a roller coaster!
